Creating Your Own Longevity Plan: A Step-by-Step Guide

Longevity is something we all desire, but figuring out where to start can feel overwhelming. When I first delved into longevity, I was lost. I asked experts, spoke to friends, and tried different strategies, but none of it felt tailored to me. It took me 18 months and over $50,000 to figure out what worked. Frustrated by my experience, I founded Longevity Health to help others avoid the same struggle.

Here’s a simple framework that can help you build your own longevity plan. Over the next few days, I’ll break it down into 5 core steps that I followed, based on both personal experience and the science behind longevity.

1. Find Your Longevity "Why"

Understanding why you want to live a longer, healthier life is the foundation of your plan. For me, it was about staying active and engaged as I age—skiing in my 80s, hiking in my 90s, and being able to play with my grandkids. What’s your motivation? Defining your purpose will guide your entire strategy.

2. Develop a Longevity Strategy

Once you know your "why," the next step is creating a roadmap to get there. A clear strategy will help you make informed decisions on where to focus your efforts. Your strategy will evolve, but having a starting point is crucial.

3. Prioritize Longevity Testing

Testing provides a scientific foundation for your strategy. It helps identify areas that need improvement and guides your decisions on lifestyle changes. For me, testing highlighted areas that I could optimize for better health outcomes.

4. Implement Lifestyle Changes

I focused on lifestyle changes that didn’t require significant time or money. Small, consistent adjustments can have a huge impact. For example, I began working on my skiing form later in life. By incorporating private lessons and better equipment, I’m setting myself up for long-term success in skiing.

5. Consider Medication and Supplements (When Necessary)

While I don’t focus too heavily on medication or supplements, I’ve created a simple guide for how I think about them. This includes considering when they are necessary to support your goals, but they should always complement a solid foundation of lifestyle changes.

For example, skiing wasn’t part of my routine until I was in my 40s. While I may not have perfect form, I’m committed to improving my technique to reduce injury risk and maintain my ability to ski into my 80s. Similarly, hiking with a weighted backpack now challenges me, but it prepares me for the strength I’ll need in the future.
